The Better Way Home

Stop Thinning the Paint

We live in a culture of "optimization"—finding ways to do more with less. But when we apply that logic to our spiritual lives, we end up "thinning the paint." We offer God a version of ourselves that looks good on the surface but lacks the substance to withstand the rain.

True restoration doesn't come from driving harder into the dark; it comes from the humility to turn around. Whether it's the hubris of thinking we know a shortcut through the mountains of life or the pride of a bad business practice, the message of the Gospel remains the same: Repaint and thin no more.

Jesus doesn't stand over us with stones of condemnation. Like the woman in the temple, He offers us a "Better Way Home"—a path paved with mercy, requiring only that we align our hearts with His.

Follow-Up Exercises:

  1. The Mirror Audit: Read Philippians 2:5. This week, identify one specific situation where your "attitude" is different from Christ’s. Practice one "corrective steering" action to bring it back into alignment.

  2. The Micah 6:8 Challenge: Write out Micah 6:8 and put it on your bathroom mirror or car dashboard. Before every major meeting or difficult conversation this week, ask: "Am I acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly right now?"

  3. Inventory of the "Shortcut": Identify one area where you are currently "thinning the paint" (e.g., cutting corners at work, being half-present with family). Commit to doing that one thing with "full-strength" integrity this week.
